Coffeeneuring Ride 4, Summer in Fall!

All the colors

It doesn't get much nicer than today's summery day in late October! Last week it was so raw and chilly, we came close to turning on the heat in the house. Today, the temps outside hit 76 degrees! Crazy weather! I took a trail ride into town with a side detour to Hawthorn Pond. We still have a lot of green trees for this time of year, but there are pockets of autumn colors here and there.

I dipped over to Java Sun for an iced chai (with almond milk) and a pistachio biscotti, which looked yummy but sadly was very dry and short on flavor. Once-upon-a-time, this was one of my favorite coffee shops, but lately it's been hit or miss.

Three coffee-dedicated rides to go, and I'm on track to actually finishing the Coffeeneuring Challenge on time this year! (Last year I needed the bonus day when I misread my calendar -- a few years I've finished on the last day.) I don't want to jinx it, but I'm feeling optimistic.

The Northern Rail Trail

Rich and Chip take a break from the rain

Despite ambitious plans at the beginning of the summer, Chip and I decided last week not to ride this year's Harpoon Point to Point -- in part due to the low-key summer I've been having and lack of training. Instead, we tossed the mountain bikes in the back of the car and headed up to Ascutney to check out some trails. Rich was interested in riding as well -- as we've made a tradition out of doing the P2P together -- so he met us in Vermont on Saturday despite rain in the forecast.

Let me just add that I don't put much credence in weather forecasts -- they are always wrong. So when I heard thunderstorms were expected in the area, I didn't believe it. (Hahaha...)

From Ascutney, we drove 25 minutes north to Lebanon, New Hampshire to The Northern Rail Trail -- what a terrific discovery! The mixed terrain trail of hard packed dirt, crushed stone, and gravel extends for approximately 58 miles down the former Boston and Maine Rail line, beginning in Lebanon and traveling east/south to Boscawen on the Merrimack River. My initial plan was for us to ride as far as Danbury (28 miles/56 RT) but didn't count on torrential rain and severe thunderstorms to hit us. We headed out in a light, misty drizzle which eventually turned into drenching downpours with rumbles of thunder six miles into the trail.

Despite poor visibility and tough riding conditions in the rain, we continued on to Canaan (14 miles) where we found a charming breakfast/lunch spot, Dishin' it Out, still open for lunch with 30 minutes to spare. We walked in soaking wet and asked if it was still ok to get lunch. A few folks in the restaurant chuckled at our appearance, but all were genuinely nice and welcomed us right in, despite the fact we were leaving mud and puddles on the floor as we took a table. (A terrific place! We'll go back!)

"You're jumping in the lake?" "Why not? We're already soaked"

After lunch, we returned to the trail and headed back to Lebanon at a somewhat faster pace -- we gained 500 feet in elevation on our wet ride to Canaan, so it was nice to have a slight descent on the trek back). We stopped five miles out of Lebanon for Chip and Rich to check out a rope swing hanging over Mascoma Lake, and of course both took turns jumping into the lake. (Chip several times.) Their reasoning was that they were already soaked from the rain, so why not jump in the lake? Hahaha... (At this point, my Strava app quit, probably while I was taking a video of the two of them jumping into the lake, but in all, we rode just under 28 miles round trip.)

Catching that moment just before splashdown

We had a great adventure on The Northern Rail Trail despite the wet weather challenges; Scenic lake and mountain views, seven river crossings in the first four miles, an abandoned mill and waterfall, an old train depot; Chip wiping out on a bridge, and Rich and I almost doing the same behind him; and both boys scaring the hell out of me showing me an enormous spider in the tunnel (eesh)... it was a fun afternoon. I'm looking forward to checking out other parts of the trail in the future!

He stole my bike...

Chip and I headed out for a trail ride on Saturday...

but ended up ditching those plans after an off-trail side trip to the Farmer's Market,
(where he bought cider donuts)...

and then ending up at the beach (for lime rickey's)...

'cause that's how we roll.

Off-Road MTB

Loving the adventure
The sad thing about mountain biking is that I didn't discover it sooner.
I love, love, love riding trails.

Adventures with Chip, MTB

I had to buy him a burrito at Qdoba today, as incentive to drive to Bradley Palmer State Park for some mountain biking with me, but it was worth it. Chip and I had a great afternoon riding trails, getting a little lost, trying to avoid the areas where hunting is allowed... because being mistaken for a deer would be a bad. About halfway through our ride, Chip asked, "How many miles have we gone?" Ha. I was afraid to tell him I forgot to press the start button on the Garmin. "Ummmm... two?"

"That's not right", he replied. Funny how he instinctually knows how far we've gone, and yet still asks me how far we've ridden. Every time. On every ride.

"You didn't start the Garmin, did you." (More of a statement than a question.)

"Ummmm... no?" (He rolls his eyes, shakes his head, and rides off. I then start the Garmin.)

He was in a crabby mood for a short while after that, and later tried to convince me that he was just in a bad mood because he was thinking about school and his annoying math teacher... but really, he was mad at me because I didn't start the Garmin. I didn't have the numbers right. Sigh.

No Garmin, No Rules!

It was a great day for a great ride, though, and always fun to adventure with Chippy, my partner-in-crime. I'm crossing my fingers the new Kona 29er arrives this week. This amazing weather isn't going to last forever!

Loving Off-Road, Loving Fall

I'm hoping this great weather continues for a while...
Trail riding at Bradley Palmer State Park today.
Just a few wipeouts and two new bruises. Maybe three.
And two deer!
Great day.

Coffeeneuring ride #6, MTB Adventures with Chip

Peace out. MTB trails and coffee.
We had gorgeous Fall day today despite cloudy skies. Temps were in the low 60s which is amazing at this time of year. Chip and I decided to head out on the mountain bikes today, taking the trail into Marblehead for coffeenuering ride #6, (and breakfast for Chip) at The Driftwood. So much fun.

Coffeeneuring Ride #6
Chip decides to #makeitmaple at The Driftwood
After a super long breakfast, (the kitchen being rather slow for such a small place), we hung out by the near-empty harbor for a bit before continuing on towards Redd's Pond, Black Joe's Pond, and Steer Swamp. So many laughs. We somehow made a weird turn on one of the swamp trails and ended up doing a loop back to Redd's Pond, but no worries. We rode back through town towards Elm Street to pick up the trail, where Chip wiped out with a complete back-over-front-end flip. Ouch

So much fun today -- (despite Chip's wipeout, which left him a bit bruised) -- and Coffeeneuring ride #6 is in the books.

Adventures with Chip

Trail adventures!

I needed a break from my projects today, and a trail ride was the perfect escape. Of course Chip wanted to join me on my ride... because he's awesome. We headed down the trail, chatting it up, climbing the trail behind Hawthorn Pond, and then heading over to try a different trail head to the Forest Rivers Conservation Area. OMG, rocky and narrow and steep and twisty-turny downhill!! SO FUN!!!!! I couldn't stop laughing.

Um, Chip. You go first.

We had a great day, a fun ride, and we saw a bunny!! (Good find, Chippy!)

Fun times. Love this kid.

Quick ride before the storm

Riding in the snow is harder than it looks! Chippy and I headed out for a trail ride this afternoon -- though he had a difficult time in the snow and slush with his 24" tires. We managed to take the trail into Marblehead for about a mile and a half miles before returning home to exchange a pair of gloves. He asked me as we approached our street, "How many miles have we gone?" I had to take a guess at three. While he got a pair of warmer gloves, I grabbed the Garmin, because he really likes stats. He'll be a Strava addict one day.

We headed back out for Part 2 of our ride, deciding to stay on paved roads for a quick loop down to the beach. It was good to get out before the storm, and it was fun catching up with him. The kiddo talks a lot when we're on the bike -- I love that.

Cold? Just a little

I've been taking full advantage of the mountain bike these last two weeks, checking out trails and riding on the beach. I like riding with the wider tires on the icy roads and trails, which are definitely safer than my road bike! Until you're riding in an area you've never been before... following some footprints in fresh snow... and realize you've biked onto a sheet of ice flowing along the river. OMG. Heartstopping moment there. Pleeeeaaassse don't break through the ice.

Ya. I was lucky.

Forest River Conservation Area is my new playground. I just need to watch where I'm going.

Bundle up, Sixteen Degrees

Cold chilly days this week, with temps in the upper teens, lower 20s throughout the week. I had originally planned to get in a run on the treadmill today, but instead hopped on the mountain bike for a quick trail ride -- 16 degrees -- before getting Will to his swim meet. (Really, I just wanted to be outside.) The trail was quiet, and I saw several Northern Cardinals on my ride -- their bright red feathers really stood out against the snow and the bare trees. So pretty! The air was cold and still, and the sound of cracking ice under my tires, as I hit a few frozen puddles, echoed around me.

Just a short ride, under 7 miles, but good to get out.

Houston

I headed to Houston on Friday to spend the weekend with RAAM soul sister Ingrid Hillhouse -- my first time in Texas! We had a lot of fun exploring the city, going to a few parties, (including one with country-western singer Robert Earl Keen, who is popular with the A&M grads), and of course some biking. Ingrid and I got a quick ride in on Saturday -- and I was able to do some MTB trail riding on Sunday while she ran a half marathon. (She is amazing.)

We had a great weekend and it was fun riding the mountain bike. I'd been going back and forth between picking up a mountain bike or cyclocross bike next Spring, (hard to decide which), and Shayne convinced me I'd prefer a CX bike. Riding the MTB proved he was right. (*sigh*. We won't tell him.) I never really got comfortable on the mountain bike, and the disc brakes took some getting used to. (I crashed once.) I was so concerned about alligator encounters on the trails, it was hard to concentrate on the bike handling. (Really, my imagination took over, and I swear there were alligators lurking on every trail. Hahahaha...)

A great time in Texas.

Trails, Ponds, Swamps, and more Trails

Hahahaha... crazy pic.

This photo was taken at Foster's Pond by my friend Paula -- which is crazy because I don't recall her taking it! What was I looking at?!?! I love riding the trails lately, although my tires are not happy. And geesh... the MUD! I was spoiled when VK pro mechanic Zane Free cleaned my bike so thoroughly last month -- though now it's a wreck. He'd be happy to hear that I've discovered some new trails since he left, and checked out Steer Swamp. (Thanks Zane! Fun stuff!)

I soooo dread cleaning my bike before P2 tomorrow night. Muddy mess.

Trails and Mud, Before the Storm

Weather guy Matt Noyes' warning of "Four days of junk" pushed me to head out for a trail ride early Tuesday morning before the rain arrived. I actually didn't beat the rain, and ended up getting soaked, but it was "New Kit Day", so all was good. (My new VKCX jersey arrived earlier in the week. Thank you, Ian Richards!) My friend Paula happened to be on the trails as well, (running), and dared me to ride down a rocky descent. What am I? 12?

Ya. I rode it. Hahaha. She was sure I'd fall on my ass -- and I almost did. Great pic of me thinking, "What the hell am I doing?" Hahahaha. Love it.

Easy Spin with the VKCX Team

Just another day left before the VKCX gang departs for Rochester, (so sad). After the weekend's challenging races in Providence, (and a late night on Sunday), Monday was a low key day for all of us. Rebecca and Caro had a hard weekend of racing, and an easy recovery spin was on the day's agenda. The four of us took a casual ride through Marblehead, down the streets I grew up on, stopping along the way at Old Burial Hill, (where Zane looked for the oldest gravestone), and Grace Oliver's Beach, (to check out the rocks and seaweed?).

Riding with the three of them was fun, as they each took turns riding the gnarly sidewalks down West Shore Drive, jumping the curbs and tree roots bulging up through the asphalt. Zane took a bloody wipeout on one of the jumps, which wasn't much fun, though he brushed it off. (His arm is sporting some gross road rash today.) We took the trail home, where Caro spotted a large PVC drainage pipe to ride through. (Wish I got a photo of that!)

It was a short ride, but a typical recovery spin for them. Lots of fun.

Day 6: 30 Days of Biking, Breakfast with Chip

My Saturday Cyclopath ride was cut short when I got my second flat this week while riding over the Beverly Salem bridge. (Rear wheel, this time.) There were only four of us for the breakfast ride, so the girls pulled over and stayed with me while I changed my flat tire. But, since I couldn't get a good tire pressure after pumping up the tire, I decided to head home -- which was a good call because as soon as I arrived, the tire went flat again. (Piece of glass still stuck in my tire.)

I was disappointed not to get a ride in, but I do have another bike, so I switched to the Lexa and asked Chip if he wanted to take a trail ride to the Salem Diner. (Of course he did!) We had a fun ride down the trail and it was a great way to spend the morning. (Thanks, Chip!) Later, I headed over to Fitwerx for spare tubes and a new CO2 inflater. Too many flats lately!

Trail Adventures with Chip, Part 2

Chip is always willing to go for a bike ride.

We're starting a new month, and my training with Shayne has been suspended for a while. Since I won't be getting Shayne's lovely coaching emails every morning, with long rides and intervals, (eeesh), I've decided to have fun in September with my rides and end the season the same way I started -- with a 30 Days of Biking challenge. It has to be easier in September than it was in April, right? (OMG. The snow! The rain! The winds! April was tough.)

To start the challenge, Chip and I headed down the trails through Marblehead and took a detour over to the beach. Feeling ambitious, he suggested we "loop the neck" too, which he'd never done before. We had such a blast! We stopped at the lighthouse out on the neck, (where he tried riding on the rocks), and then returned to Devereux Beach for iced tea (me) and ice cream (him). It was so much fun!! A great way to start the new month. Awesome.

Perfect Summer Week

Hard to believe July is over... and the boys have yet to start their summer reading. Tsk tsk. We had a busy week but I managed to get my training rides in -- (SpiderOne on Monday, a tempo ride to Gloucester on Wednesday, an adventure ride on Thursday, (No Garmin, No Rules), and intervals today.) So far, so good. My energy is down and my weight is up, which isn't so great, but I'm working on that, too.

The Harpoon Point to Point is next weekend (!), and I'm looking forward to it. I received an email this week that road construction has forced several changes to the 100 mile route, and one climb, at mile 53, "will have support to drive you up it if you need it!" (Seriously?)

Hahahaha... I hope that's a joke.
